A BREEF History of the organization

BREEF was founded in 1993 by Sir Nicholas Nuttall to address growing concerns on the state of The Bahamas’ marine environments.  Almost single handedly, Sir Nicholas turned the organization into a leader in educating Bahamian’s about the marine resources. As the organization began to take a more active role as watchdogs, advocates for political change, and public educators, it transitioned from being a voluntary entity to a more formalized non-government organization.  In 2002, B.R.E.E.F. hired its first Executive Director, and established its first Board of Directors, with Sir Nicholas in the role of Chairman of the Board.

Sir Nicholas Nuttall Minimize

Past Chairman and Founder

Sir Nicholas was educated formally in England in the 1940’s and 50’s but his 'real education' came from British soldiers and tunnel miners, a French conservationist, a museum in Monaco; from Bahamian teachers and from observing coal reefs around the world. He have learnt three classic lessons. First that our interest in conservation stems from the wish to conserve our life support system, particularly our food supply. Second that by studying our fellow creatures who have also survived three billion years of evolution we can find all the answers we need to keep homo sapiens going for its natural span as a species.  Lastly the best thing we can each do for conservation is to obey the spirit of our laws.
