 Bahamian Marine Reserves Network

Click the link below to read about Fully-Protected Marine Reserves. The booklet highlights the need for and benefits of establishing Marine Reserves in The Bahamas. Its aim is to educate Family Island communities about the Department of Marine Resources' initiative to establish a national network of fully protected marine reserves. It was produced by The Bahamas Reef Environment Educational Foundation (BREEF), The Department of Fisheries and The Nature Conservancy in collaboration with The Bahamas National Trust and The Bahamas Biocomplexity Project coordinated by the Center for Biodiversity and Conservation  at the American Museum of Natural History.

In 2000, The Department of Marine Resources, working in consultation with BREEF, The Bahamas National Trust, local experts and scientists, proposed the establishment of a nationwide network of Marine Reserves. After review of several sites, it was determined that the establishment of the first five would be in the following areas:

1. North Bimini

2. Berry Islands

3. South Eleuthera

4. Exuma Cays

5. Abaco

Scientific research shows that fish are larger and more abundant within marine parks, serving to replenish nearby fishing areas. In addition, a network of marine reserves that represents all habitat types on which fish species are dependant, would help to ensure the sustainability of the commercial fishing industry.
